Scheduled Tasks

This is simply a browser window that lists the tasks that Windows 98 is scheduled to perform automatically. Double clicking on a task will open up its properties where you can change the settings for when it will be performed. You can also set what should happen should the task not be executed for some reason - running on batteries or turned off, for example. The maintenance tasks set up by the Maintenance Wizard appear in here, scheduled as set up to optimise the PC regularly. You can also add your own tasks so that other programs, like Backup, will be executed automatically. This is a simple form of scripting, but should not be confused with the Windows Scripting Host, another new feature, which is for actually controlling other programs automatically.

If you choose to add your own items, you are guided through the process by a wizard which sets the schedule up for you. If you want to make further refinements, such as whether the task should be performed if running on batteries, then you can open the Advanced tab from a tick box on the final screen.

One item that appears in Scheduled Tasks by default is Tune-up Application Start. This does not refer to the de-fragmentation process used to speed up application loading, but to another method which requires the patching of certain executables for better memory usage. This uses a program called WinAlign and this is the only place you have any interface with it. It has no parameters and should simply be left alone.
